Two get three years’ jail, whipping for RM65 robbery

KUALA LUMPUR: Two friends were sentenced to three years in jail and one stroke of rotan each, by the Court of Sessions here on Wednesday (Aug 24) for robbing a convenience store for RM65.

Judge Emilia Kaswati Mohamad Khalid sentenced Mohd Nazir Bahli, 36, and Ahmad Shahmi Azmi, 31, both food deliverers, after they pleaded guilty to committing the crime in Taman Pertama, Cheras at 9:30 a.m. pm on August 18.

They were ordered to serve their prison sentence from August 19, the date of their arrest.

The duo was charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which provides for prison sentences of up to 20 years and flogging, upon conviction.

Before sentencing, Emilia Kaswati asked Mohd Nazir how he could commit such an act, to which he replied: “I was desperate.”

Emilia Kaswati: ”Foreigners work very hard in Malaysia to be able to send money to their family back home, but you are willing to feed your family with ill-gotten gains. Who is in difficulty now?

Mohd Nazir: Me and my family, Your Honor.

According to the facts of the case, when both defendants entered the store, one of them went to get a bottled drink, and while paying at the register, the two raided the cash register and seized RM65 before fleeing in a motorcycle.

Meanwhile, in a separate Sessions Court, Mohd Nazir and Ahmad Shahmi pleaded guilty to two counts of theft for RM324.15.

The crimes were committed in two commercial premises in Cheras between 8:20 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on August 18.

Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali set September 26 for sentencing.

However, both defendants claimed trial for committing three counts of gang robbery on August 18 between 8:49 pm and 9:45 pm before Sessions Court Judge Izralizam Sanusi and Hamidah Mohamed Deril.

The court set September 28 and October 5 to mention them again. – Bernama

Covid-19 Watch: 2,898 new cases, nationwide ICU bed usage at 66.7pc

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 2,898 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday (Nov 26), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 4,984,272 infections since the pandemic began.

The KKMNow portal of the Ministry of Health reported that 2,896 of the new Covid-19 cases on Saturday were local transmissions, while two imported infections were registered.

There were 2,789 recoveries on Saturday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,920,616 since the pandemic began.

The portal also reported that there were 27,008 currently active cases in the country, with 24,924, or 92.3%, in home quarantine and 14 people, or 0.1%, admitted to low-risk quarantine and treatment centers.

The KKMNow portal reported that 2,070 patients, or 7.66% of the total, were currently admitted to the hospital for treatment. The number of patients with Covid-19 admitted to intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country is 97, of which 57 require respiratory assistance.

The national ICU utilization rate was 66.7%, with ten states or localities reporting ICU utilization rates greater than 60%.

Kedah had the highest ICU utilization rate at 80.8%, followed by Kelantan (80.3%), Selangor (79.6%), Melaka (76.8%), Perak (73.7%) ), Johor (72.3%), Penang (67.5%), Kuala Lumpur (65.2%) and Sabah (62.9%).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry’s GitHub data repository reported that four deaths from covid-19 were reported on Saturday.

This brings the death toll to 36,648.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will hold a meeting with government departments and agencies in Putrajaya on Sunday (November 27) that will focus on cost of living issues affecting people.

“Tonight, we held a prayer session with parishioners and friends in Sungai Long.

“Tomorrow morning at 11am there will be a meeting with government departments and agencies in Putrajaya that will focus on the cost of living issues that are burdening the people,” he said in a post on his Facebook and Twitter accounts on Saturday. (November 26).

PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) has become the 2022 Malaysia Cup champion after beating Selangor 2-1 in the final held at Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Saturday (November 26).

JDT and the Red Giants were tied 1–1 at halftime before JDT’s Fernando Forestieri scored the game-winner in the 59th minute.
