Odisha to set up automatic weather stations

Published

on

For better impact-based forecasting, the Odisha government has decided to install telemetric rain gauges in all gram panchayats, automatic weather stations at the bloc headquarters, and sensors in river systems.

These steps will help the state obtain accurate information in real time for more effective disaster management, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said on Saturday.

Patnaik said this while addressing an event organized here to observe the Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day and the National Day for Disaster Reduction.

This day is observed every year to remember the precious human lives lost in the Super Cyclone of 1999.

For 23 years since the Super Cyclone, the Odisha government has done its best to make Odisha a safer place during disasters, he said.

“Odisha today has the strongest infrastructure for disaster management. The world has recognized our efforts all these years. I would like to thank my Rs 4.5 crore brothers and sisters for their support and solidarity in building an Odisha resistant to disasters,” said the Chief Minister.

He appreciated the efforts of members of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) and Mission Shakti, frontline workers such as ASHA and anganwadis, NGOs and volunteers at the community level, government officials, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), fire services, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and law enforcement personnel for their coordinated work to reduce human casualties.

During 2022, he said, the state faced flooding in the Mahanadi, Baitarani and Subarnarekha river systems, affecting more than 23 lakh people in 16 districts.

Due to strong preparation and coordinated efforts, the state evacuated nearly 2.7 lakh people to safer places and took timely relief and restoration measures, it noted.

“Our geographical location makes us prone to natural disasters. Every life is precious. Nearly 10,000 people died in the 1999 super cyclone. Back then, we had no safe shelters. During these years, 815 multi-purpose cyclone and flood shelters were built while Another 55 new shelters are under construction with the Chief Ministers Relief Fund (SMRF),” he said.

To strengthen community-driven preparedness, Patnaik said his government is training more than 40,000 volunteers at the village and shelter levels. In addition, the government is undertaking capacity building of elected representatives of PRI, Urban Local Bodies (ULB), Mission Shakti members, ASHA, Anganwadi workers, Vana Surakhya Samiti (VSS) members, as they play a key role in disaster risk reduction. he added he.

In addition, disaster and pandemic management is being introduced into the educational curricula of students from standard 4 to graduation level with a view to preparing disaster management ‘yodhas’ in every village and household, Patnaik said.

On this occasion, he called on all stakeholders and citizens to come forward and join the government in creating a disaster resistant Odisha.
