Kabaddi players at a state-level tournament in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur were allegedly served food from a toilet, prompting authorities to suspend the district sports officer for laxity and blacklist the vendor.

An alleged video of the incident that surfaced on social media showed cooked food being stored in the toilet at Saharanpur’s Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Stadium, where kabaddi players took it themselves.

The state level sub-junior women’s kabaddi tournament was held from September 16-18 in which more than 300 players from 16 state divisions participated.

The incident drew criticism, with BJP Pilibhit MP Varun Gandhi questioning whether Indian sports should be cleansed of politicians and their representatives to reach its zenith.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also criticized the incident, asking how Indian athletes would win gold at the Olympics if they were treated this way.

Additional Chief Secretary (Sports) Navneet Sehgal told PTI that Saharanpur District Sports Officer Animesh Saxena was suspended on Monday.

In a statement, Sehgal said: “The investigation into the matter has been handed over to the Saharanpur District Magistrate. The cook and food supplier for the players have been blacklisted. Instructions have been issued not to give them any work. in future.”

Special adverse entry will be made against staff who were serving food, he said.

Apart from this, all sports officials in the district have been instructed that any kind of laxity in the provision of facilities to players will not be tolerated, it said in the statement.

District Magistrate Akhilesh Singh said Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Rajnish Kumar Mishra will carry out the investigation and submit a report within three days.

“The rice and ‘pooris’ were kept in a toilet. The video, which went viral on social media, showed players taking the food kept inside the toilet,” Singh said.

He added that it had also come to the attention of the administration that the food was cooked near a swimming pool and only two cooks were hired to prepare it for more than 300 people.

The food was then stored in the toilet, he added.

The “pooris” were spread out on a piece of paper while the rice was half cooked. The players couldn’t even get proper food, the district magistrate said.

Singh has ordered the investigation team to talk to the athletes, get the video and file a report.

“The district sports officer did not inform the administration about the state-level tournament. If the administration had been informed, it would have paid special attention to the competition,” he added.

Commenting on the incident, BJP MP Varun Gandhi tweeted: “Is the success of Indian athletes in spite of the system and not because of it? This constantly disrespectful behavior is a great disgrace to our nation. Should it be cleaned up?” the Indian sport of politics, politicians and their administrative representatives to reach its zenith”.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal criticized the incident, tweeting: “If this is how we treat our athletes, how will India win Olympic gold? How will India become number one in sports?”
