New Delhi: Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan took office on Friday as the country’s deputy Chief of Defense Staff (CDS). The position has been vacant for more than nine months since the death of the first CDS general, Bipin Rawat, in December 2020.
In his first speech as CDS, he expressed his gratitude to the forces and pledged to live up to expectations and face all challenges and difficulties together.
CDS Chauhan laid a wreath at the National War Memorial and then inspected a three-service Honor Guard on the South Block lawns before formally taking office. CDS later visited Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at his South Block office.
“I am proud to assume the responsibility of the highest rank in the Indian Armed Forces. I will try to meet the expectations of the three defense forces as Chief of the Defense Staff. We will face all challenges and difficulties together,” he said.
Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Navy Vice Chief Vice Admiral SN Ghormade and Air Marshal BR Krishna were also present at the ceremony.
The Center had announced on Wednesday the appointment of Chauhan as the new Chief of Defense Staff.
