GE15: Four ministers among big guns likely dropped from contesting

PETALING JAYA: Four ministers are likely to be removed from the Umno candidate list to stand at the 15th General Election.

Federal Territories Minister and four-term MP for Arau, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, called Monday night (October 31) the “saddest night” when he announced the closure of all his operating rooms in his current constituency and the lowering of all Umno and Barisan Nasional flags on their social media accounts.

“Tonight is the saddest night. All operating rooms in Barisan of Arau parliamentary constituency have been closed and all flags have been lowered. First time in history,” Shahidan stated in his post.

This comes a day before Barisan’s announcement of the list of candidates for parliamentary seats across the country on Tuesday (November 1) at the World Trade Center by Barisan Chairman and Umno Chairman Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Shahidan first won the Arau seat in 1986. He served as Perlis menteri besar and was also a Tambun Tulang State Assemblyman from 1995 to 2008.

Another Umno minister said to have been dropped from the list of candidates is Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa, who hinted that he was fired.

In his Facebook post today, he stated that he heard that many “winners were being sacked, especially those close to the Prime Minister.”

“They supposedly promised that they would choose the winners, acceptable and sympathetic, but we hear here and there that many of the ‘winners have been sacked, especially those close to the prime minister,'” Annuar said.

Shahidan and Annuar have been strong critics of Ahmad Zahid and supporters of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob since they became part of the government.

Meanwhile, in JOHOR BARU, it became known that Tenggara’s incumbent MP, Datuk Seri Dr. Adham Baba, who is the Acting Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation and Tenggara Umno’s division head, is also expected to be eliminated.

“The news that his name is not on the Johor Barisan candidate list came quite late considering he is also Johor Umno’s chief information officer,” the source added.

The source said Umno is likely to field his Tenggara division youth boss Manndzri Nasib for the job.

Speculation about Dr Adham’s discharge intensified recently after he missed two programs in the constituency on Monday (Oct 31) morning.

Apart from Dr. Adham, the other Johor minister who will not participate in GE15 is Acting National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, the current MP for Kota Tinggi.

On October 22, it was reported that Halimah, from the same division as Dr. Adham, will make way for Umno Vice President Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
