Cong distances itself from Shivraj Patil’s comment on Bhagavad Gita, ‘Jihad’

Congress has distanced itself from former Home Minister Shivraj Patil’s alleged comments about Lord Krishna “talking about jihad” in the Hindu holy book Bhagavad Gita.

The party’s general secretary, Jairam Ramesh, citing Nehru, said Patil’s comments were unacceptable.

“According to reports, my senior colleague Shivraj Patil made some comments on the Bhagavad Gita that are unacceptable. He subsequently clarified. @INCIndia’s position is clear. The Bhagavad Gita is a key foundational pillar of Indian civilization,” Ramesh said on Thursday after the BJP criticized Patil and Congress for playing partisan politics.

Shivraj Patil was speaking at a book launch event on Thursday. “Not only in the Koran, but also in the Mahabharata, the Gita part, Shri Krishna also talks about ‘jihad’ to Arjun and this is not only in the Koran or the Gita, but also in other religions like Christianity,” Patil said in Hindi.

Ramesh, while clarifying his party’s position, quoted excerpts from Nehru’s “Discovery of India”. He said: “The message of the Gita is not sectarian nor is it addressed to any particular school of thought. It is universal in its approach to all, Brahmin or outcast: ‘All roads lead to Me,’ it says. It is because of this universality that it has found favor with all classes and schools.

“There is something about him that seems capable of constant renewal, that does not become obsolete with the passage of time… an inner quality of serious inquiry and search, of contemplation and action, of poise and equilibrium in spite of conflict and There is balance in him and a unity in the midst of disparity, and his temperament is one of supremacy over the changing environment, not seeking to escape from it but fitting into it.

“During the 2,500 years since it was written, Indian humanity has repeatedly gone through the processes of change, development and decay; experience has succeeded experience, thought has followed thought, but has always found something alive in the Gita, something that fit developing thinking and had freshness and applicability to spiritual problems that afflict the mind,” Ramesh quoted from Nehru’s book.
